IMPERIAL CHINESE ATLAS -- Huang Chaso Zhong Wai Yi Tong Xing Tu . Hubei Province: Fu Shu Jing Xuan Lou, 2nd year of the Tongzhi reign [1863]. 31 original parts, 8° (293 x 187mm). Title printed on yellow paper, preface printed in red, 638 folded leaves comprising maps and text, including two world maps, some hand-colouring in blue. (Some very light spotting to a few leaves.) Original brown paper wrappers (some small areas of loss and a few old creases). A fine copy of an Imperial Atlas of China in original parts as issued. The first part contains the title, preface, a lengthy introductory text, and two hemisphere maps. Other parts each deal with different geographical areas, the maps running in continuous sections. The title indicates that this work was produced under Imperial orders and the atlas reflects the influence of Western European mapmaking on Chinese cartography: while the world maps are clearly derived from Western models, much of the work in the atlas is produced along traditional Chinese lines.
