Ses visées sont éducatives et humanistes. Les grands masques idimu interviennent lors des rites initiatiques des plus hauts gradés du bwami et sont inclus dans le matériel collectif de ces grades. Ils peuvent être portés par un officiant ou suspendus, accompagnés de masque de petites tailles, à une barrière érigée pour la cérémonie. Il représente alors le grand initié, créateur du rite. Ce très important masque idimu, au visage en forme de coeur divisé par un long nez dépourvu de narines, montre une belle surface polychrome noire, rouge et blanche témoin de son ancienneté et de sa longue utilisation cultuelle. Les perforations encadrant le menton servaient à la fixation d'une longue barbe de fibres tressées. L'intérieur est superbe et cohérent avec son grand âge présumé. Son histoire occidentale et les nombreuses publications qui lui ont été consacrées montrent l'intérêt dont il a été l'objet et l'importance que les différents auteurs ont bien voulu lui conférer. LEGA MASK, REPUBLIC DEMOCRATIC OF THE CONGO H. 13 in The Bwami society in the Lega world has its own initiation rites and brings cohesion and organisation to the society. Its aims are educational and humanist. The large idimu masks are used in initiation ceremonies for the highest ranking bwami and are included in these ranks' collective material. They can be worn by an officer or hung from a banner with small masks for the ceremony. This very important idimu mask has a heart-shaped face spilt by a nostril-free nose. Its beautiful black, red and white polychrome surface reflects its age and extensive cult use. The perforations framing the chin were used to fit a long beard with braided fibres. The inside is superb and consistent with its supposed great age. Its western history and the many publications devoted to it show the interest in it and the importance that various authors gave it.
