Bien que le mérite de l'invention du cubisme revienne sans équivoque à Picasso et à Braque, c'est Jean Metzinger qui, plus que tout autre peintre, a pris l'initiative de fonder une école de peinture cubiste et d'en codifier les idées par écrit. En 1911, il rassemble un groupe d'artistes partageant ses idées - Delaunay, Léger, Gleizes, Le Fauconnier et lui-même - pour exposer ensemble au Salon des Indépendants, lançant ainsi officiellement le mouvement cubiste à Paris ; l'année suivante, il est à l'origine de l'exposition de la Section d'Or à la Galerie la Boétie, la manifestation la plus complète du cubisme avant la guerre. Metzinger est en outre le co-auteur, avec Gleizes, de Du Cubisme (1912), qui articule pour la première fois une base philosophique complète pour ce langage pictural radicalement nouveau.
La présente œuvre est une composition de nature morte substantielle, magnifiquement équilibrée entre des blocs de couleurs vives et des contours et renfoncements sombres clairement définis. La délimitation précise des contours et l'ombrage volumétrique des formes arrondies décrivent chaque objet, découpant des profils dramatiques avec des ombres plus sombres à gauche et des couleurs plus vives à droite. De tels procédés descriptifs sont emblématiques de cette période de l'œuvre de Metzinger, qui s'éloigne progressivement de sa phase cubiste tardive pour se rapprocher de son esthétique puriste, qui deviendra plus proéminente à partir de 1923.Composition à la pipe faisait partie du stock de la Galerie de L'Effort Moderne, dont le gérant n'était autre que Léonce Rosenberg. Fervent adepte du cubisme, Rosenberg est l'un des principaux protagonistes du monde de l'art parisien en temps de guerre. Il met en place un certain nombre de stratégies pour défendre, promouvoir et commercialiser ce mouvement auprès d'un public international. Tout au long de la guerre, il a signé des contrats avec de nombreux artistes cubistes, dont Braque, Léger, Metzinger et d'autres, ce qui leur a permis de maintenir leurs pratiques respectives et de produire des œuvres exceptionnelles dans les années à venir, comme le présent tableau.
Although credit for the invention of Cubism lies unequivocally with Picasso and Braque, it was Jean Metzinger more than any other painter who took the helm in formulating a Cubist school of painting and codifying its ideas in writing. In 1911, he organized a group of likeminded artists — Delaunay, Léger, Gleizes, Le Fauconnier, and himself — to exhibit together at the Salon des Indépendants, officially launching the Cubist movement in Paris; the next year, he was a driving force behind the Section d’Or exhibition at the Galerie la Boétie, the most comprehensive manifestation of Cubism before the war. Along with Gleizes, moreover, Metzinger was the co-author of Du Cubisme (1912), which articulated fully for the first time a philosophical basis for this radically new pictorial language.
The present work is a substantial still life composition, magnificently well-balanced between blocks of strong colour against clearly defined dark outlines and recesses. The sharp delineation of contours and volumetric shading of rounded forms describes each object, cutting dramatic profiles with darker shading to the left and brighter colour to the right. Such descriptive devices are emblematic of this period in Metzinger’s work as he gradually emerged away from his late-Cubist phase toward his purist aesthetic that would become more prominent from 1923 onwards.
Composition à la pipe appears in the stock books of Léonce Rosenberg’s Parisian dealership, Galerie de L’Effort Moderne. A fervent devotee of Cubism, Rosenberg was one of the leading protagonists of the wartime Parisian art world, instigating a number of strategies in order to defend, propound and market this movement to an international audience. Throughout the war, he signed contracts with a host of cubist artists including Braque, Léger, Metzinger and others which enabled them to sustain their respective practices and produce the exceptional work in the years ahead, such as the present work.
