LEON DUPIN FAMILISTERE. 1928. 55x391/4 inches. Joseph-Charles, Paris. Condition B+: repaired tears and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. As was the common practice in France at the time, Leon Dupin was most likely under contract with the successful printer Joseph Charles, who published all the posters that Dupin is known to have designed. A talented poster artist with a strong sense of stylization, his graphics are always clear and bold. In the utopist socialist movement which was prevalent in Europe during the 1850s, the Familistére was conceived as a living complex for workers that would include residences, a store, schools, a theatre, gardens etc (the word in English is Phalanstery). Antoine Godin realized the project at Guise in 1862 building an entire community. The name and concept went on to became a co-op movement of grocery stores that opened in industrial regions primarily in northern France. Here, in the French Art Deco style, Dupin designs a funny little man whose geometrically designed body is forming the letter 'F'. A clever, eye catching idea perhaps to reinforce that the Familistere is part of everybody.
