Contemporary German blindstamped brown calf, on each cover a roll-tooled frame containing heads in medallions, surrounding an inner panel of acorns, above on upper cover the first owner's initials "I.S.F.", and the date 1550 (upper cover almost detached, spine very worn, corners scuffed), in morocco case. Autograph inscription on pastedown of upper cover by JOANNES BUGENHAGEN Pomeranus, in Latin, presumably to the first owner, "We are cursed if we do not preach the Word" etc., signed and dated 8 September 1550. Bugenhagen (1485-1558) was a follower and great friend of Luther and Melanchthon, and instrumental in organizing the spread of the Reformation in Northern Germany. On the rear pastedown are written various citations from Plato, St.Bernard, Isaiah, possibly in the hand of MELANCHTHON. Two further quotations from Callimachus at the end of the first work.
