Medals to Trumpeters from the Collection of Roderick Cassidy A rare Great War M.M. group of three awarded to Bandsman H. W. Mabbett, 4th Hussars, who was serving as a Trumpeter at the time of being decorated: he was twice wounded by gunshots Military Medal, G.V.R. (3273 Tptr. H. W. Mabbett, 4/Hrs.); 1914 Star (3273 Tptr., 4/Hrs.); British War Medal 1914-20 (3273 Pte., 4-Hrs.), light contact marks, very fine or better (3) £400-500 Footnote M.M. London Gazette 27 June 1918. Herbert William Mabbett was born in Chelsea, London and originally enlisted in the 8th Hussars in October 1908, aged 15 years, but transferred to the 4th Hussars in February of the following year. Appointed a Trumpeter in April 1913, he served out in France from 15 August 1914 to 31 May 1915, and again from 2 December 1917 to 16 August 1918, both stints of active duty being curtailed by wounds, namely a gunshot to his right hand on 28 May 1915 and a gunshot to his left elbow on 10 August 1918. Mabbett latterly served as a Bandsman and was discharged in October 1920.
