Appointed a Bandsman in March 1897 and a Trumpeter in November 1899, he went on to witness active service out in South Africa from March 1900 to October 1902, and was awarded the above described combination of Medals and clasps. He was subsequently advanced to Lance-Corporal Trumpeter in November 1904 and to paid Lance-Corporal in October 1906, and was discharged at the end of the following year.
