MERCATOR, GERARD and JODOCUS HONDIUS Atlas minor. Amsterdam: Jodocus Hondius [ colophon : Dordrecht: Adrianus Bottius 1610]. Oblong 4to, 178 x 227 mm. (7 x 9 in.), eighteenth-century vellum over pasteboard, later pastedown endpapers, upper and lower margins of engraved title cropped by 1/2-inch (shaving platemark at bottom), dedication leaf cropped at bottom, forecorners of fols. 4Q1 and 4Q4 repaired, affecting the borders of maps 148 and 151, a few other minor marginal repairs, engraved title and approximately half the maps with early red ink underlining to selected place names, wormholes to fol. T3, occasional mostly marginal staining . Engraved allegorical title, allegorical engraving, and 153 engraved maps with title cartouches, all paginated, with letterpress captions (a few erroneously printed over the engravings) and letterpress text printed on versos, including Jodocus Hondius's twin-hemisphere world map and his planispheric map of the Christian world (Shirley 259 and 260), woodcut printer's device on verso of last leaf, text in Latin. Phillips 429; Koeman II, Me 189A (this copy without the inserted "Index Regionum" leaf and the inserted map of Tierra del Fuego). Provenance : Georg Frederic Legfert; M. Fr. W. Nordius, early ownership inscriptions on verso of title, a few annotations in the same hands.
