MEXICAN WAR]. Thirteen letters and documents relating to Humphrey Marshall's participation in the Mexican War as Colonel of the 1st Kentucky Volunteer Cavalry and the Battle of Buena Vista. The collection includes: MARSHALL, Humphrey. Autograph manuscript signed, his report of the Battle of Buena Vista, marked "Louisville Weekly Courier", 5 June 1857. 17½ pp., 8vo, on rectos only, in pencil . A copy of Marshall's official report of his regiment's participation in the Battle of Buena Vista, possibly meant for publication in a Kentucky newspaper. Marshall gives a detailed account of the battle, which concludes: "My regiment was at no time fifteen minutes out of the fire of the Enemy...If the part it has played has been serviceable to our country, and in any manner contributed to produce the glorious result...we shall feel fully recompensed for all we have suffered...the dead have left an example which must endear their memory while patriotism has an admirer." -- WOOL, John E. Wool sends a copy of his order for dealing with guerillas during the occupation of Mexico. Smith recalls the Mexican War: "After I last saw you...you, and your gallant Regiment passed through that storm of fire, and iron hail, at Buena Vista; yourself, I was happy to learn, unscathed, although so many of your brave companions in arms, found a soldier's grave." Smith notes that he was in Riley's brigade and saw battle at Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo, and Churabusco and was twice wounded, disabling his left arm. -- CARLETON, James Henry Union General . Autograph letter signed, Fort Leavenworth, 17 December 1850. 3 pp., 4to . Carleton, veteran of Buena Vista and author of an account of the battle, asks Marshall's aid in receiving a promotion. Carleton writes: "When I wrote the History of our Great Battle I felt that I had the honor of Old Kentucky somewhat in my hands".
