Ervin, Jr. as Senator, to Andrew Joyner, Jr., Washington, D.C., 4 March 1970, 1 page, 4to, Senator's stationery , forwarding the above letter. NIXON SEEKS SAM ERVIN'S VOTE TO CONFIRM JUDGE HAYNSWORTH A provocative letter, addressed by Nixon to the Senator who would later achieve fame as chairman of the Senate Select Committee charged with the investigation of the Watergate Scandal which ultimately led to Nixon's resignation as President. Nixon urges Ervin to vote for the confirmation of his nominee to the Supreme Court: "I believe that as time goes on you will be proud of your vote for Judge Haynsworth. The Supreme Court needs men of his legal philosophy to restore the proper balance to this great institution. I do want you to know that I am most grateful for your support of this distinguished jurist..." Letters of important political content by Nixon are noticeably scarce. Haynsworth's nomination to replace the seat vacated by Judge Abe Fortas was eventually rejected by the Senate, as was Nixon's second choice, Judge G. Harrold Carswell. Harry A. Blackmun, a conservative judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, was finally confirmed 12 May 1970.
