By the time it was made public the infection was relatively far advanced, and since it had not spread, my physician, Dr. Harvey Klein, decided that no extraordinary course of treatment was advisable….As you can imagine, I have learned that a number of public figures have been afflicted by shingles, including former Presidents Hoover and Eisenhower. Former Senator Norris Cotton described the pain involved by observing, ‘Thank God you don’t die from them—just wish you did!’” The New York Times reported in its 9 January issue that the 72-year old former President suffered an outbreak of the painful virus on his upper back and neck in December, “while completing his new book, No More Vietnams …Dr. Harvey Klein, the former President's physician, said it was one of the worst cases of shingles that he had seen, but that Mr. Nixon, who is ambulatory, might recover in a month and a half. ‘He's in an awful lot of pain,’ [Nixon spokesman John] Taylor added. ‘He doesn't complain about it much, but he says, ‘Yes, it hurts like crazy.
