Engraved architectural title, Parergon with drop-head title with woodcut surround, Nomenclator title with woodcut vignette, engraved portrait of Ortelius by Phillip Galle, 112 DOUBLE-PAGE ENGRAVED MAPS ALL FINELY HAND-COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (Title with loss repaired and laid down, text leaves with soiling and some marginal repairs, some light browning, a few marginal tears, a few maps with minor abrasions.) Modern buckrum, front panel of old morocco binding laid down. Second Latin edition, printed by Plantin. A TALL COPY WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLORING. "All the elements of the modern atlas were brought to publication in Abraham Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. This substantial undertaking assembled... the best available maps of the world by the most renoened and up-to-date geographers... each of Ortelius' maps was engraved specifically for his atlas according to uniform formats" (Shirley).
