val d'eenen soet, en d'ander bang." Catchpenny print with a single large thumb-coloured woodcut of a women's "steps of age", 25.5 x 34 cm, Deventer, J.H. de Lange, (c. 1800), numbered "N. 29" in upper right corner, under passe-partout.
Folded twice and w. thin spots on folds; a few small parts of blank margins missing. A good copy for this type of print. Boerma, Borms et al, Kinderprenten, volksprenten, centsprenten, schoolprenten. Populaire grafiek in de Nederlanden 1650-1950, p. 215-218 & Oude fonds van Jan de Lange Sr. en J.H. de Lange, nr. 29; De Meyer p. 199 ff, De Lange Cat. 29; not in Cat. Volks- en Kinderprenten van De Lange. Jan Hendrik de Lange was active from 1787 to 1822. The "steps of age" was one of the most popular themes in Dutch catchpenny prints from the 17th century onwards, usually with men on the stairs, now always rare. Ours is the even rarer variant with women. And 1 other similar print (dam.). Added: "Nr. 130. Uerwerk plaet" (Turnhout, Glenisson & Van Genechten, c. 1850). (total 3)
