Collation : a 4 (1r verses in praise of Plato and Ficino by Naldus Nandius, title, 1v dedication to Lorenzo de Medici, 2r life of Plato by Ficino, 4v translator's acknowledgements, table of contents); 2 a-o 8 p-q 1 0 (Hipparchus-Gorgias); r-z 8 (Ficino's commentary on Plato's Convivium de amore , text Convivium-Menexenus); A-D 8 E-F 1 0 G-S 8 (De re publica-Epistolae); T-Z AA-FF 8 GG-HH 1 0 (Ficino's Theologia , HH8v colophon and register, HH9r chapter table of Theologia , HH10v blank). 448 leaves. Gothic types 9:130 (title Divus Plato ) and 8:74 (text), Roman types 2:83 (capitals only: dialogue protagonists), Greek type 80(74)mm (quotations). Initial-spaces with guide-letters. (Worming at beginning and end affecting text, light marginal stain.) BINDING: contemporary South-German blind-stamped pigskin, over wooden boards, quadruple and triple fillets dividing the sides into different geometric compartments, containing lily, rosette, foliate, acorn and other stamps, chased brass center- and corner-pieces, clasps, manuscript title label on front cover, Buxheim shelf-mark in red on spine, (small wormholes). The tools apparently unrecorded. Provenance : Buxheim, Charterhouse (inscription, library stamp) -- ?Sigismund Staingl (1604 purchase inscription) -- Paul Schmidt (bookplate) -- Pierre Hollier Larousse (bookplate) -- purchased from John F. Fleming, New York, 10 June 1983. Second Latin edition of most of Plato's works (fourth appearance of the letters, third appearance of Gorgias , which had been published before separately in Aretino's translations). FIRST EDITION of Ficino's Theologia Platonica , second edition of his other writings in this collection. The first edition of Ficino's Plato had been published at Florence in 1484-85 by the Ripoli Press and Laurentius de Alopa for Francesco Berlinghieri and Filippo Valori.
