Engraved document signed ("U.S. Grant"), Washington, D.C., 26 March 1869, 1 page, large folio , ON PARCHMENT, blue papered seal, elaborately engraved with American eagle at top flanked by warships, at the bottom Neptune with trident and other watergods and mermaids and an array of flags and cannon, with imprint "American Bank Note Co., New York," appointing John S. Newell a Lieutenant in the Navy -- And four others, identical to the above, signed by Andrew Johnson, 12 March 1868; another with stamped Johnson signature, 20 December 1866; one signed by Benjamin Harrison, 20 December 1889; one signed by Rutherford B. Hayes, 9 February 1880, each appointing John S. Newell to various ranks in the Navy. All five in unusually fine, fresh condition. (5)
