R.M.S. TITANIC: Chief Officer Henry Wilde Collection. Unique archive of letters dating from 19th July to 10th March 1912. Fourteen of the fifteen letters are written onboard the Olympic, some of which carry the rare Transatlantic No 5 postmark. They chronicle a period from Officer Wilde's appointment to the Olympic as Chief Officer in July 1911, the position he would later hold on Titanic, to his final weeks on board the Olympic before his transfer to Titanic. They offer an unprecedented snapshot into the thoughts of Edward Smith's No 2 Titanic's sister ship, he describes as a "Fine Ship". The archive also covers Olympic's collision with H.M.S. Hawke, in a letter written on board the Olympic shortly afterwards he describes the collision as "unfortunate" and mentions how they will be going to Belfast after making temporary repairs, he mentions the repair process in dry dock in Belfast and also Capt. Smith and J. Bruce Ismay. The letters include numerous references to Harland and Wolff, Belfast, one, written onboard in Plymouth on the 27th February refers to Olympic losing a propeller blade and them having to go back to Belfast on the Spring tide. Simply stunning.
