RICCI, Marco (1676-1730). Varia Marco Ricci prestantissimi experimenta ab ipsomet auctore inventa, delineata, atque incisa. Venice: 1730. Oblong 2° (443 x 595mm). Etched title by Carlo Orsolini after Antonio Visentini engraved portrait of Ricci by Faldoni after Rosalba Carriera 20 etched plates of landscapes by Ricci, extra-illustrated with four smaller format etched plates of figures after Marco Ricci and two engraved bacchanalian scenes by Jacomo Leonardis after Sebastiano Rizzi, dated 1770. Contemporary figured paper over thin pasteboard (small tears to extremities). Provenance : 19th-century German collector's manuscript label on upper cover. A VERY FINE UNSOPHISTICATED SET OF THE SECOND STATE OF RICCI'S ETCHINGS, with sequential numbering added to the top left corner of each plate. With one exception, separate dedication texts were printed just beneath each view. Watermarked throughout with two or three versions of the three crescents with various counter-marks. Marco Ricci born on 5 June 1676, was the nephew of Sebastiano Ricci His output of etchings was small (he only started to work in the medium in 1723), and until Pittaluga's analysis of 1946 was not highly regarded. Since then his reputation has grown, and the skill of both his technical ability and his picturesque and allusive treatment of light are highly valued. Dario Succi, Da Carlevarijs ai Tiepolo (nos 413-432) makes comparisons with Canaletto, Tiepolo, Belloto and Piranesi. The two bacchanalian scenes by Leonardis after Sebastiano Ricci are recorded in Da Carlevariis as Tiepolo, nos 244, 245. Ricci's landscape etchings are as follows (using Succi's titles, and giving his numbers in brackets). 1 (413) Paesaggio con armenti a villaggio con torre quadrata. (P.:292 x 425mm, dedication plate: 30 x 344mm) 2 (414) Paesaggio con armenti, lavandaie e capanna. (P.: 293 x 432mm, d.p.: 26 x 422mm) 3 (415) L'apparizione dell'orso.
