SLOANE, Sir Hans (1660-1753). A Voyage to the Islands Madera, Barbados, Nieves, S. Christophers and Jamaica, with the Natural History of the Herbs and Trees, Four-footed Beasts, Fishes, Birds, Insects, Reptiles. London: B[enjamin] M[otte] for the Author, 1707-1725. 2 volumes, 2° (345 x 260mm). Titles printed in red and black, text leaves mounted on guards as noted by Hunt. 285 double-page or folding engraved plates, the majority by Michael Vander Gucht or John Savage after Everhard Kickius (f. 1701-1705), including a large folding map, mounted on guards throughout. (Occasional minor wear to edges of some folding plates, occasional light spotting, occasional light marginal soiling.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, edges and corners repaired, some wear). Provenance : James Theobald (1688-1759, merchant, antiquary; inscription recording the gift from Hans Sloane, bookplate). FIRST EDITION OF SLOANE'S MOST IMPORTANT WORK. PRESENTATION COPY TO JAMES THEOBALD . No presentation copy is recorded at auction by ABPC and RBH. 'Theobald was a pallbearer at the funeral of his friend Sir Hans Sloane in January 1753 and a Sloane trustee; he had presented Sloane with seventy-nine specimens for his natural history collections. Theobald also promoted the career of the naturalist George Edwards who singled him out as one of his earliest patrons' (ODNB). Theobald was a vice-president of the Society of Antiquaries, and council member and auditor of the Royal Society. Sloane’s A Voyage to the Islands contains 'the earliest representations of the flora and fauna of Jamaica and neighbouring islands' (Hunt). ‘The process of collation and rationalization [in this work] represents one of Sloane's most valuable contributions to the advancement of science... The new volume rendered obsolete many of the clumsy synonyms that littered earlier literature and brought about an improvement in nomenclature that was to be superseded only by the system of Linnaeus’ (ODNB). Sloane succeeded Isaac Newton as President of the Royal Society in 1727, soon after publication of the second and final volume. Hunt 417; Nissen ZBI 1854; Sabin 82169.
