A Voyage to the Islands Madera, Barbados, Nieves, S. Christophers and Jamaica, with the Natural History of the Herbs and Trees, Four-footed Beasts, Fishes, Birds, Insects, Reptiles, &c. of the last of those islands.
London: B[enjamin] M[otte] for the Author, 1707-1725. 2 volumes. Folio (340 x 250 mm). Titles in red and black. 285 folding or double-page engraved plates and large folding map all mounted on guards by Michael Vander Gucht or John Savage Modern vellum, a.e.g., housed in custom cases. Condition: title to vol. 1 spotted and soiled, some leaves washed, light spotting. first edition of "the earliest representations of the flora and fauna of Jamaica and neighbouring islands" (Hunt). Before travelling to the West Indies, Sloane was a notable botanist, doctor and collector in England. During his 15 month stay as the physician to the Governor of Jamaica, Sloan collected 800 specimens which Everhard Kickius drew and Vander Gucht and Savage engraved. Hunt 417; Nissen ZBI 1854; Sabin 82169.
