SLOANE, Sir HANS. A Voyage to the Islands Madera, Barbados, Nieves, S. Christophers and Jamaica, with the Natural History of the Herbs and Trees, Four-footed Beasts, Fishes, Birds, Insects, Reptiles, &c. of the last of those Islands. London: Printed by B. M[otte] for the author, 1707-1725. 2 vols. not uniform, folio, on guards, vol. I: 342 x 246 mm., vol. II: 337 x 232 mm., contemporary English red morocco, sides with double gilt fillet outer border enclosing two connected panels of triple gilt fillet, massed ornaments of drawer-handle and other tools and cornerpieces in the outer panel border, spines in seven compartments with six raised bands, gilt lettered in one compartment, a repeated gilt panel ornament, g.e. The first volume bound by ROBERT STEEL (apprenticed to Samuel Mearne 1668 to 1675, taking over Mearne's tools in 1686 and royal binder to William III), see G.D. Hobson , English Bindings 1490-1940 in the Library of J.R. Abbey (London 1940); the second volume closely similar and in the style of Thomas Elliott Both volumes with spine ends and corners restored. Vol. II lacks blank leaf 6B2 as usual, margins of a few plates trimmed, dedication leaf of vol. I slightly torn, a few leaves partly detached from guards, slight tears to plates 8, 9, 57 and 96, plates 137-152 slightly stuck together in gutter with occasional tears. FIRST EDITION. Titles printed in red and black, 285 double-page engraved plates by M. van der Gucht after E. Kickius, many folding (numbered I-XI and 1-274), approximately 250 relating to botanical subjects, the rest to fauna. A very handsome copy of Sloane's major work.
