SMITH & Son, Charles, London Smith's TERRESTRIAL GLOBE containing the whole of THE LATEST DISCOVERIES AND Geographical Improvements also the TRACKS of THE MOST CELEBRATED CIRCUMNAVIGATORS LONDON C. SMITH & SON 172 STRAND [c.1840] A 13-inch (33cm.) diameter terrestrial table globe made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours and minutes in two directions, the Greenwich meridian ungraduated, the anti-meridian graduated in degrees, the ecliptic graduated in days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, the oceans with an analemma and showing the tracks of various explorers with dates, including Cook, Clerke, La Perouse, Vancouver and Gore, New Guinea shown with partial coastline, Tasmania labelled VAN DIEMEN'S LAND , the Antarctic showing some small stretches of coastline including Graham L d. disco d by Cap t.Briscoe 1831-2 , Enderby's Land disco d.by Cap t.Briscoe 1832 and Adelie L d.dis d. by D. Urville 1840 , also with a note reading Capt. J. Weddell R.N. reached this point 1823 , the continents outlined in green and showing towns, cities, mountains, rivers and the Great Wall of China, various details such as PLAINS OF NUESTRA SONORA DE LA PAZ , COPPER INDIANS , Kootame Ind . and Bound y.Settled 1825 (by Alaska) in North America ( numerous old neatly repaired cracks and abrasions, areas of discolouration ), with engraved brass hour dial and meridian circle, the hand-coloured copied paper horizon graduated in degrees in two directions, days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, with wind directions and edged in red, supported on four baluster turned ebonised oak legs united by cross-stretchers -- 17in.
