With errata and privilege at the end. (Browned in places.) CONTEMPORARY GOLD-TOOLED CLARET MOROCCO FOR LOUIS XIV, double roll-tooled fleur-de-lys border separated by double fillets, the King's crowned monogram (Olivier 2494 fer 21) in center of the sides, a smaller version of the monogram in four compartments of the spine, lettering in second compartment, fifth compartment left empty, single fleur-de-lys roll on turn-ins, gilt edges, (extreme corners restored). Folding cloth case. Provenance : Louis XIV (1638-1715) -- Elie Petit (bookplate) -- Jacques Millot (bookplate), his first sale, Paris 1975, lot 392. THE KING'S COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION of "the first bibliography of 'best' books" (BBB Wittockiana 4). It "is less a bibliography than a handbook of 'literature'. It surveys in summary form French novels, letters, lives, essays &c., followed by a guide, in the same semi-bibliographical form, to French history" (Besterman, Beginnings p. 42).
