STATTEN, Vargo (Pseudonym of John Russell Fearn; 1908-1960). Creature from the Black Lagoon . London: Dragon Publications, [1954]. 8 o. Original blue cloth, spine gilt-lettered; pictorial dust jacket (minor rubbing to edges, with a few tiny nicks or short tears); imaginative quarter morocco folding case with leather and cloth onlays showing the monster. FIRST EDITION of the novelization of the famous 1954 Universal film in which a team of scientists on an expedition up the Amazon River encounters a fearful fanged creature who is half man, half fish. The author, John Russell Fearn, was an extremely prolific and popular British writer, who began in the American pulps, then almost single-handedly drove the post-World War II boom in British publishing with a flood of science fiction, detective stories, westerns, and adventure fiction, writing under various pseudonyms. This book was issued simultaneously in paper and hardcover editions--both are VERY SCARCE.
