A letter written by Douglas announcing the birth of his third child: “I have the satisfaction to inform you that Addie presented me with beautiful daughter this morning, whom we have named Ellen Douglas.” The letter is mostly filled with family news and hopes for visits: “We are very anxious To have you and Father come and make us a visit this winter and look at the sights of Washington.” Sadly, little Ellen would survive only a few weeks. In red ink to verso: “Presented by Mrs. Jules Granger, Sister of the writer, Recd Oct. 17/85” above a purple “E.F. Strickland” stamp. [With:] Hoyt, Eugene F. (1846-1912). ALS, “Eugene F. Hoyt,” 2pp, 12mo, Clifton Springs. July 28, 1885. Addressed to E.F. Strickland. Hoyt writes on behalf of his grandmother, Sarah Granger (1811-1897), sister to Stephen A. Douglas presenting the above letter to Strickland: “The letter sent may not be quite the proper thing for your use, but it is the most appropriate of the few now in my possession. Of the many letters written by Mr. Douglas to his relations here but few have been preserved.” Condition: Douglas: Expected creasing, light stains on unwritten page. Hoyt: on lined paper, very small tear at upper edge, light adhesive residue to verso edge.
