PRESENTATION COPY FROM THE AUTHOR TO ALFRED TENNYSON (half-title inscribed 'A.T. from F.L. 6 August, 1886 Cromer'). This copy of London Lyrics was given to Tennyson as a parting present after he and Hallam had been staying as guests of the Locker-Lampsons at Cromer in Norfolk; Tennyson and Hallam left Cromer to arrive at Cambridge on 7 August 1886 (see F.B. Pinion A Tennyson Chronology , 1990, p. 163). London Lyrics was first published in 1857, and extended or rearranged in successive editions up to 1893. Tennyson had also received a copy of the first edition from Locker, acknowledging receipt in a letter dated 1 February 1858 ( Letters II, p. 193). He read the work again early in 1872, writing to Locker on 22 January: 'Your London lyrics are very good and skilful: they are even better than I thought' ( Letters III, p. 24). Although frail in health, Locker accompanied the poet laureate on a tour of Switzerland in 1869. Tennyson was a wedding guest at his second marriage to Hannah Jane Lampson, in 1874, and ties were deepened when Lionel Tennyson married Locker's daughter, Eleanor, in 1878. Locker adopted his wife's surname in 1885. In his memoirs, My Confidences , he called Tennyson 'a consummate artist ... splendidly equipped.' But posed this interesting conundrum. 'My selections from Alfred would make a much thicker volume than Wordsworth's, but would it be more precious?' (1896, p. 178). (2)
