all 3 are photographs of engravings and include General Dix, General Banks & Ellsworth. These were clearly produced early as "inspirational" subjects. Not long after the start of the war, ambrotypes had virtually disappeared from the photographic "landscape." General John Adams Dix, a veteran of the War of 1812, after a varied career in both the political and private sectors, was selected Secretary of Treasury by President Buchanan to finish the last two months of his term. In this capacity, Dix sent a message to Lieutenant Calwell of New Orleans, that, among other things, ordered: If anyone attempts to haul down the American flag, shoot him on the spot, that, of course, became a rallying cry for the Union. Elmer Ellsworth became a martyr for the Union cause doing just that with a Confederate flag. Young Ellsworth was reading law in Abraham Lincoln's Springfield office, but at the onset of war, went to New York City, raising a unit of Zouaves from the city's fire fighters. Eager to be the first to invade the south, the Fire Zouaves marched unopposed into Alexandria the day after Virginia seceded. Spotting a Confederate flag atop the Marshall House Inn, Ellsworth cut down the flag, but the proprietor shot him as he was coming back down the stairs. General Nathaniel Banks scored an early Union victory against Jackson's forces, but Jackson got even a bit later, defeating Banks' (much reduced) unit that was guarding the Shenandoah. The great Valley itself became symbolic of the ongoing war. Ultimately the General's greatest service to the Union was in the number of soldiers he was able to recruit. Condition: All lacking cases but with foil surrounds, Banks and Ellsworth with scratches, VG-to VG.
