Title: Travels of Anacharsis the Younger in Greece, During the Middle of the Fourth Century Before the Christian Aera Author: Barthelemy, Abbe [Jean-Jacques] Place: London Publisher: G.G.J. and J. Robinson Date: 1791 Description: Seven octavo text volumes, plus quarto atlas volume. Atlas contains thirty-one folding engraved plates and maps (some hand-colored in outline). Text volumes 8x5, period full tan calf; Atlas volume 10¼x8¼ matching half calf and marbled boards. First English Edition. Anarcharsis was an early 6th Century B.C Sythian Prince / Explorer, included as one of the Ancient Seven Sages, who travelled from his homeland on the northern shores of the Black Sea to Athens. After extensive travels in the ancient World described in his work, he returned home where he was killed by the Syths because he wanted to introduce the cult of the "Great Mother of the Gods." Lot Amendments Condition: Atlas volume rebacked retaining original spine leather; some wear at extremities; light foxing; very good. Item number: 200674
