AN IMPORTANT HISTORICAL MANUSCRIPT -- Marshal Turenne's own account of his decisive victory over the Spanish army outside Dunkirk in 1658, describing in detail the sequence of events immediately before the engagement, the order of battle and the unfolding of the action; the last paragraphs describe the rout of the enemy in which Don John remained to the last to rally his troops. 'Il y avoit desja quelques jours que lon avoit nouvelles que Mr le prince [Louis II, le Grand Condé] et don Juan daustriche estoient arriveés a furnes quils y assembloient leur armee et come cest un pais ou on ne peut pas prendre langue de lennemi que par sa marche on attendoit depuis deux iours quils savancassent pendant que le siege se continuoit et que lon approchoit de la constrescarpe, Le mercredi 12 juin on vit avancer vingt ou trente escadrons qui pousserent un escadron de grande garde et s'approcherent assez pres du camp ... ainsi on fit la nuit l'ordre de bataille M.de Castelnau fut mis pour commander l'aisle gauche ou M. de Varenne estoit a la premiere ligne de cavallerie et M. de Shomberg a la seconde. M. le marquis de Crequi estoit a l'aisle droite et M. dumiere davant escadrons de la mesme aisle qui touchaient l'infanterie ... On marcha avec ordre jusque tout proche de l'ennemi lequel voiant sortir l'armee hors de ses lignes fit revenir en diligence les gens qui estoient exposes ... il y avoit treize bataillons qui faisaient bien six mille hommes de pied pour sa cavallerie elle estoit de neuf mille chevaux ... The victory of the allied French and English armies over the Spanish army of Flanders commanded by Don John of Austria and Louis II de Bourbon, the Great Condé (leading the French rebel army) outside Dunkirk persuaded Philip IV to sign the Treaty of the Pyrenées in 1659 and was the turning point of the Thirty Years War. Battle was opened on 14 June, the day after Don John and the Swiss guard arrived before the French; the allied armies lost 500 men, and the Spanish and the Prince de Condé 3,000 in addition to which 3,000 were wounded or taken prisoner. On 23 June Dunkirk passed from the Spanish to the French and was then ceded by Mazarin, under the terms of his treaty with Oliver Cromwell, to the English.
