1960 BENTLEY S2 STANDARD SALOON Registration No. 610 EXP Chassis No. B280AM Engine No. 302AB Black and white with grey leather interior. Right hand drive. Engine: V8, overhead valve, 6,230cc, 200bhp at 5,000rpm; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Brakes: four wheel drum; Suspension: front, independent by coil springs and wishbones, rear, semi-elliptic. Right hand drive. At the 1959 Motor Show, Rolls-Royce Bentley Motors introduced their first all-alloy V8 engine in the Bentley S2 and its equivalent, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. It was well received despite its similarity to its six cylinder predecessor. Apart from the engine the only difference between the S1 and S2 were minor changes in the chassis layout and the internal furnishings. Performance, however, was markedly improved with a top speed of 113mph and a 0-30 acceleration time of 3.8 seconds (0-60 in 11.5 seconds). This particular example was first registered to C.J. Oppenheim Esq in March 1960 and it came into the current family ownership in December 1962. Being a fastidious owner and great Bentley enthusiast (having previously had a 3½ litre Derby Bentley, Mark VI and R Type) 610 EXP became a tremendous pride and joy and countless hours were spent keeping the car in the best condition. In 1968 the bottom half of the car was painted black instead of blue and some minor corrosion attended to. The car was often shown at BDC concours and other events and frequently won its class. Special features which the owner had fitted included an ingenious system of automatic radiator shutters which closed when the ignition was switched on. The under bonnet presentation was outstanding and the cam covers were highly polished along with a chromed oil filter cap and tenor horn. There is a central driving fog lamp fitted along with an RREC badge on the bumper bar and there is also a stainless steel exhaust system. The interior is the original grey leather upholstery with matching carpets and headlining. The woodwork is in excellent condition and under the rear vanity tables there are compartments for bottles and glasses. The front door arm rests are adjustable for comfort and there are sliding door compartments below. It has an original radio, a small dashboard-mounted compass and of course all the windows are electric. There is a full complement of tools. Sadly, owing to ill health, the owner was unable to drive the car during the past 8 or 9 years, although it has, of course, always remained garaged and kept carefully covered. Today there is some slight pitting to the rear bumper and some slight micro blisters to the paintwork. The mileage indicated is some 77,000 and this is undoubtedly from new. The engine is in running order and the car was recently started by a leading Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialist, but unfortunately does not have an MoT owing to the fact that it requires new rear wheel brake cylinders, and minor faults such as a cracked windscreen and new wiper blades. There is a large file of correspondence which accompanies the car and despite having stood for a number of years the overall appearance suggests with some work it could soon be returned to its previous concours standard.
