Cylinders: 8, 4,727cc Power: 306bhp Produced: 1965-1970 Production: 515 (1965) Legendary Texan racing driver Carroll Shelby’s team had been campaigning Ford’s Mustang ‘pony car’ with considerable success in North America, winning the SCCA’s B-Production title three years running in the mid-1960s. Capitalising on his success, Shelby began manufacturing modified Mustangs, which were officially sanctioned and sold through selected Ford dealerships. The first Shelby Mustang - the GT350 - arrived in 1965 powered by a modified version of Ford’s 289ci (4.7-litre) small-block V8 producing 306bhp, with options of a 340-360bhp unit in competition trim or 400bhp supercharged. A four-speed Borg-Warner manual gearbox was the stock transmission on early Shelby Mustangs, though a heavy-duty, three-speed automatic soon became available as an option. The running gear was appropriately up-rated to cope with the GT350’s increased performance, incorporating the optional Kelsey-Hayes front disc brakes, stronger Ford Galaxie rear axle, Koni adjustable shock absorbers and aluminium-alloy wheels. The first cars were supplied minus the rear seats, thereby qualifying the GT350 as a two-seat sports car! Outwardly there was little to distinguish Shelby’s GT350 from the standard product apart from a pair of broad ‘racing’ stripes down the body centreline. On the open road there was, of course, no comparison. One of the great iconic musclecars of the 1960s, the Shelby Mustang continued to be based on the stock version, receiving the latter’s styling changes and mechanical improvements while retaining its own distinctive special features until production ended in 1970. One of only 515 standard road models made (out of a total production of 562 in 1965), this Shelby GT350 has been verified by the Shelby American Automobile Club as authentic, although it is possible that some body panels may have been replaced. The car was sold new on 3rd August 1965 to Archway Motors in Baltimore, USA and first owned there by Raymond Earl Holland. It was subsequently owned by Curt Vogt (the proprietor of Cobra Automotive), Wayne Conover, Cliff Simpson and John Masiello in the USA before coming to Europe where its first owner was Claude Dubois, the former importer for the Benelux countries. The current owner acquired the car from Mr Dubois in 2005. Prior to acquisition by the vendor, the car had undergone a complete restoration, managed by Claude Dubois, which took nearly two years to complete. Indeed, with the exception of the engine (a genuine K-code unit), everything has been either replaced with new parts or restored to ‘as new’ condition. The engine functions perfectly and its ancillaries (carburettor, ignition system and water pump) are either new or fully restored. The suspension, steering, clutch, braking system, Holley fuel pump, rear bumpers and American Racing aluminium-alloy wheels are new, while the cooling system, electrics, dashboard and carpets have been restored to similar condition. A set of five original wheels comes with the car, which has been updated with power assistance for the steering and servo assistance for the brakes. Accompanying documentation includes restoration invoices from Carrosserie Janssens (coachwork) and GTM Motorsport (mechanicals) totalling approximately €10,000. The car possesses normal Belgian registration papers. • From first year of production • One of only 515 made • Effortless power • Recently restored • Tour Auto eligible 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby GT 350 Coupé Châssis no.
