1965 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER CLOUD III LONG WHEELBASE SALOON Chassis No. LCEL 15Z Silver and black with red leather interior Engine: V8, pushrod operated, overhead valve, 6,230cc; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Suspension: front, independent coil; rear, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: front, hydraulic and mechanical rear with servo. Left hand drive. The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III was the last of its series and, indeed, the last production Rolls-Royce to retain a conventional chassis prior to the introduction of the Silver Shadow in 1966. The car had the same basic V8 engine as the Silver Cloud II, although by now all of the earlier problems encountered on the V8 had been smoothed out. Horsepower was boosted by 7 due to higher compression and larger carburetors enabling these cars to attain a top speed of 155mph. The magic 0-60mph time came up to 10.8 seconds, no mean achievement for such a large motor car, and driving was made even easier due to better power steering. The distinguishing feature of the third Series cars was a 1 inch lower radiator which required a slightly sloping hood line and the introduction of four front headlamps. The third and final series of the Cloud first appeared in the fall of 1962 and continued in production until September 1965. In total just under 2,300 examples were produced. Of these, only around 253 were made with a long wheelbase such as on offer here today. LCEL 15Z has a particularly fine history and was first owned by The Marquis of Merry Del Val who was the Spanish Ambassador to the US from 1965 to 1969. This was his official personal car and is a very rare example of a long wheelbase vehicle, yet was supplied without a division. When the Marquis returned to Spain in 1969, this fine vehicle was sold to the present owners and joined a growing stable of collectors cars. In the past 29 years the car has been used very sparingly and has probably only covered around 5,000 miles. Today the recorded mileage from new is a mere 34,500. This Rolls-Royce comes equipped with full power and a trunk mounted air conditioning unit and includes a custom made luggage set for the trunk. There is also a special driver operated high intensity spotlight. As an original and authentic vehicle this car is beautifully preserved - the red leather upholstery has a sumptuous, and virtually unused patina. In recent years the silver was repainted. This Silver Cloud III is truly an exceptional example with its rare and desirable long wheelbase without division. It has a recorded mileage of just 34,500 from new and has had only two very discerning owners.
