Description The Mercedes-Benz W113 roadsters, designed by Paul Bracq, were produced from 1963 through to 1971. They were known as the ‘pagoda roof’ SL. All models boast an inline six-cylinder engine with multi-port fuel injection using a mechanical pump system adapted from the diesel motors. Rear-wheel drive configuration was complemented by independent rear suspension, a feature that greatly improved road handling. Most of these early SLs were sold with both the removable hard top and a soft top. In 1960, Nallinger eventually proposed to develop a completely new 220SL design, based on technology from the W112. The 250 SL was introduced at the 1967 Geneva Motor Show. Production had already commenced in December 1966 and ended in January 1968. The short one-year production run makes the 250 SL the rarest and most collectable of the W 113 series cars. The 250 SL retained the stiffer suspension and sportier feel of the early SLs, but provided improved agility with a new engine and rear disc brakes. Range also improved with increased fuel tank capacity from 65 L to 82 . Like its predecessor, the 250 SL was offered with a 4-speed automatic transmission, and 4-speed or ZF 5-speed manual transmissions. For the first time, an optional limited slip differential was also available. The car on offer has seen much renovation work in recent years including a respray to feuerwehr rot (red) that it displays today. During this time, many mechanical components were sourced and replaced including shock absorbers, brakes and an injection pump. Bills exceeding £7,000 are documented in the history file for mechanical parts alone and a further £12,000 spent on various other parts including the full respray and re-chroming of the bumpers. The interior is in good all-round condition, new leather dashboard and carpets have been fitted as well as renovation work to the headlining of the roof. In its original left-hand drive specification, the car comes complete with a rare factory hard top that fits the car perfectly. Recently serviced the car is supplied with a UK registration document and MoT until July 2018. We are sure this must be one of the best 250SL Pagodas on the market today.
