A 16-BORE FRENCH SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK GUN MADE FOR MIDDLE EASTERN, PROBABLY NORTH AFRICAN PRESENTATION BY ALEXANDRE CARLAT, ST. ETIENNE, CIRCA 1820-30 With long sighted barrel engraved 'Canon Tordu' at the breech and chiselled in relief with a martial trophy and crossed olive and palm branches (originally on a gilt ground) and stamped on the underside 'Merley Fraisse, Fils. Lingdon', engraved grooved tang, signed bevelled lock engraved with a wolf on the tail and fitted with roller and semi-rainproof pan, moulded figured walnut half-stock lightly carved with foliage in relief and inlaid with flowers and scrollwork in silver, chequered grip and fore-end, full silver mounts engraved by the same hand as the lock with foliage and oval medallions decorated with birds, a dog, and a castle in a landscape, small gold escutcheon, silver sling loop on the fore-end (that on the butt missing), silver baluster ramrod-pipes, the flanges each formed as a double-headed eagle, and original ivory-tipped ramrod with brass ferrule, St. Etienne proof, French poinçons de titre et de garantie (adopted in 1819) of St. Etienne, with a silvermith's mark 'E' between two stars in a diamond 48in. (121.9cm.) barrel
