A collection of 21 fragments from manuscripts in Latin and Hebrew, including Thomas Aquinas and the Hebrew Talmud, on vellum 21 fragments, (i) leaf from an Epistle Lectionary (Galatians 6:4-10 and Colossians 1:12-16), double column, 24 lines, red and blue initial, thirteenth century; (ii-iii) two pieces from an Antiphoner, thirteenth century, very faint; (iv-v) two large pieces from a glossed civil law manuscript, perhaps the Institutes of Justinian, red and blue initials, historiated initial ‘I’ (“Imperator …”) showing a man in a big hat speaking or preaching (very worn), Bologna, late thirteenth century; (vi-vii) two large pieces from the Decretals of Gregory IX, glossed, red and blue initials with good contrasting penwork, historiated initial ‘S’ (“Si quis …”, opening of book IV, tit.III, cap.i) showing a death bed scene and a draped bier, extensions including a grotesque with a bow and arrow and a long-beaked bird, probably France (perhaps written in Bologna and illuminated in Paris), late thirteenth century; (viii-ix) two horizontal strips of two bifolia from Thomas Aquinas, Catena Aurea, commentary on Luke 17-18, red and blue initials, France, early fourteenth century; (x-xi) two pieces from a complete bifolium from a grammatical text, including the opening of a chapter on participles, 29 lines, red initials, probably Germany, fourteenth century; (xii-xiv) four very small pieces from a Breviary, Germany, fifteenth century; (xv) a part leaf from a large choir Psalter, red and blue initials, Italy, fifteenth century; (xvi) a piece from a Gradual, red and blue initials, Italy, fifteenth century; (xvii) part of a very large 3-column manuscript of the Talmud, in Hebrew, Tractate Menohot, 33-34, Ahkenazi, presumably Germany, approximately thirteenth century, red stains; (xviii) part of a leaf of a Hebrew Bible, text from Ezekiel 30-31, late medieval, forming the covering around a detached binding; (xix) the upper part of a bifolium in Hebrew, rabbinic literature, late medieval, very faint; and (xx-xxi) two pieces from a Torah scroll in Hebrew, part of Deuteronomy, perhaps eighteenth century; all on vellum, all recovered from bindings and more-or-less defective
