Title: Check signed as Charles Carroll of Carrollton Author: Carroll, Charles, Signer from Maryland Place: Baltimore Publisher: Date: April 12, 1821 Description: Printed check filled out and signed in ink. 7x16 cm (2¾x6¼"), ornately matted and framed under plexiglass along with portrait and engraved metal descriptive plaque. Overall 44.5x58.5 cm (17½x23"). Charles Carroll, who added the "of Carrollton" to his name to distinguish himself from his similarly named relatives, was a wealthy Maryland planter and an early advocate of independence from Great Britain. He served as a delegate to the Continental Congress and Confederation Congress and later as first United States Senator for Maryland. He was the only Catholic and the longest-lived (and last surviving) signer of the Declaration of Independence, dying 56 years after the document was first signed.
