CHINE, XVIIIe siècle Important poids de rouleau en or et argent représentant un lion couché, les pattes vers l'avant reposant sur la bordure de la base, la gueule ouverte, la crinière traitée en boucles, le pelage ciselé. Il est tenu par une corde par son dresseur, venu de l'Ouest, agenouillé dans son dos. La base de forme quadrangulaire composée de deux plaques en argent dont le dessus est à l'imitation du lapis-lazuli. Une inscription gravée au dessous, comprenant deux vers tirés du poème " Apprivoiser un rhinocéros :Une idée de la difficulté de mettre fin à un gouvernement" (驯犀: 感为政之难终也) de l'écrivain de la dynastie Tang, Bai Juyi (白居易, 772 - 846) : "五年馴養始堪獻 Wǔ nián xúnyǎng shǐ kān xiàn Cinq années de domestication avant d'être prêt pour la consécration 六譯語言方得通 Liù yì yǔyán fāng dé tōng Six langues pouvant être maitrisées" Puis informations sur le matériau : 原金重五兩二分 Yuán jīn chóng wǔ liǎng èrfēn L'or pesant cinq taels et deux fen 添銀二兩八錢 Tiān yín'èr liǎng bā qián L'argent pesant deux taels et huit qian Le sujet du lion avec son dresseur, l'animal étant offert en cadeau par les émissaires lors d'échanges diplomatiques, est un sujet que l'on retrouve sur plusieurs oeuvres notamment peintes, dont une peinture intitulée " 西番貢獅圖" exposée au British Museum (ref 2014,3032.1). 7,5 x 5 x 4,5 cm Un document de l'analyse spectrométrique attestant d'une base argent pur et du groupe en or 18 carats à disposition du futur acquéreur. CHINA, XVIIIth century Rare and exquisite silver and gold paperweight The gold group figuring a recumbent lion resting on his back paws, the front paws leaning on the edge of the base, the mouth open, the mane finely rendered with delicate curves, and the entire fur enhanced with skilled chiselling adding to the overall quality of the object. The animal is held on a leash by its trainer, a foreign emissary depicted with beard and large eyes as per usual depiction of foreigners in chinese art. The gold patinated with grey blackish dots and stains overall possibly due to age otherwise intentional. The rectangular base made of two silver plaques assembled, the top one patinated to look like lapis-lazuli. The base inscribed with part of a poem by Tang dynasty writer Bai Juyi (白居易, 772 - 846): "五年馴養始堪獻 Wǔ nián xúnyǎng shǐ kān xiàn Five years of domestication are worthy of offering 六譯語言方得通 Liù yì yǔyán fāng dé tōng Six languages can be understood And some detailed information on the metals : 原金重五兩二分 Yuán jīn chóng wǔ liǎng èrfēn The original gold weighs five taels and two fens 添銀二兩八錢 Tiān yín'èr liǎng bā qián The silver weight two taels and eight qian Dimensions: 7,5 x 5 x 4,5 cm A spectrometric metal analysis of both metals confirming the silver made base and 18 carats gold group is available on request and will be given to the future owner.
