EISENHOWER VOWS "TO ABSTAIN FROM PARTISAN STRUGGLE," four years before he is elected President: "I am flattered by the implications of your letter...[M]y determination to abstain from partisan struggle has been adopted only after careful reflection and study... based upon what I believe to be in the best interests of our country...[A]s part of one of the nation's greatest and most influential universities I could perform a useful service...[I]f the American population can gain a true appreciation of the essentials of our foreign and related domestic problems...To cherish and defend our freedoms and our rights; to discharge our obligations to ourselves and others -- these are the things to which I want to devote myself...[T]hrough this fundamentally simple approach our American future of freedom will be secured..."
