GENERAL EISENHOWER PONDERS HIS POLITICAL FUTURE AND CONCLUDES: "I JUST WANT TO BE A ONE-MULE FARMER" A revealing, affectionate letter written about a month before he succeeded General George C. Marshall as Army Chief of Staff: "Just got back from Berlin and Prague, after a most exhausting three days...A prominent politician was in my office this a.m. He seems to have one mission in life -- to keep me here -- and is rushing to the President to recommend that action. The other day one thought that I should be something in the new league of nations, while still another believes I should be head of U[nited] N[ations] N[ational] R[elief] A[dministration?]. I tell them all the same thing -- I just want to be a one-mule farmer in Virginia or Georgia or Tennessee. But my desires are nothing -- at least to no one else. [Our son] John and I had lunch together in my office. He was here looking up some information & mad as a wet hen at 'red tape.' But I think he finally got what he came after...Nothing new on Marshal Zhukov. Lord knows we should have something soon..."
