Beschreibung:

Des passions considérées comme causes, symptômes et moyens curatifs de l'aliénation mentale. Paris: l'Imprimerie de Didot, An XIV, 1805. 4to (245 x 190 mm). Modern half calf. Provenance: David Ferdinand Koreff (1783-1851) was a physician, writer, a believer in "magnetic somnambulism," and friend of E.T.A. Hoffmann (bookplate); Jules Falret (1824-1902) developed a renowned practice in psychiatry and followed his father as director of the asylum Vanves. FIRST EDITION of Esquirol's inaugural thesis, dedicated to Pinel and his most outstanding pupil. Esquirol so closely followed his teacher's works that the contributions of the two men are sometimes confused. "Like Pinel, Esquirol did not attempt to analyze mental illness from a philosophical standpoint but sought to classify and describe the various kinds of insanity he encountered in his practice. Esquirol coined the term monomania, a concept which anticipated the modern view of schizophrenia, and he was the first to distinguish hallucinations from illusion. While at Salpêtrière, where he succeeded Pinel as chief physician, Esquirol introduced formal instruction in psychiatry and gained support for Pinel's humanitarian reform movements by lecturing throughout Europe" (See Heirs of Hippocrates 1268).
