Engraved throughout with 113 maps or views, some with contemporary hand-coloring (some occasional staining, a few maps torn) comprising vol I: engraved title and 24 engraved maps or views (15 cut round and mounted); vol II: engraved title and 23 (of 24) engraved maps or views including “Dannemark, Suede, et Pologne” on two large folding sheets (lacking map of “ Alemagne,” 2 cut round and mounted, some light marginal dampstaining); vol. III: 36 (of 38) engraved maps and views (lacking “Haute Gueldres” and “Monarchie d’Espagne”), duplicate of “Eveche de Liege,” “Ratisbonne” bound in vol. IV, with one additional plate “Piazza di Lilla, 1708;” vol IV: Table (small portion of headline torn away) 30 engaved plates and views with an additional plate of Constantinople and the Lisbonne plate bound in vol III. Contemporary marbled boards (some chipping to spines, light rubbing and staining); quarter morocco folding case. FIRST EDITION. A CELEBRATION OF THE FRENCH EMPIRE UNDER THE SUN KING. The Atlas Curieux is geographic encyclopedia of images and maps of France, with detailed views of the grand waterworks at Marly, views of the great palaces and chateaux, views and plans of the Paris Observatory, and samples of military architecture. Issued in six annual parts from 1700-1705, the maps are based on the new observations of the Académie des Sciences, and drawn up with the assistance of Philipe de La Hire. The maps of the French empire include: “Cette Carte de Californie et du Nouveau Mexique…” Paris, 1700, a detailed map of California as an island; and “Les Costes Aux Environs De La Riviere De Misisipi Decouvertes par Mr. De la Salle en 1683, et reconnues par Mr. Le Chevallier d'Iberville en 1698 et 1699 . . .” Paris, 1701, an interesting early map of the Texas, Gulf Coast and Mississippi River regions. The present copy comprises four annual parts issued between 1700-1703. A fifth part was issued 1704.
