GOLOVNIN, Vasily Mikhailavich (1776-1831). Narrative of My Captivity in Japan, During the Years 1811, 1812, & 1813 . London: Henry Colburn, 1818. 2 volumes, 8 o (213 x 130 mm). (Some spotting, mostly to first few leaves of each volume.) Contemporary half calf, marbled boards (some wear, especially to joints and extremities, second volume lacking title label on spine). Provenance : Courtney K. Clarke (signature on front flyleaf of volume I and initials on front flyleaf of volume II); Shu-Fu (Japanese bookplate). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. In 1811, Golovnin, a Russian naval lieutenant, landed on Kunashiri Island, where he was arrested by the Bakufu and imprisoned for 2 years. His release was eventually negotiated by Captain Rikord, who sailed to Japan on the Russian sloop-of-war Diana , taking on board a number of Japanese seamen shipwrecked off the coast of Kamchatka and capturing the captain and several crew from a large junk along the way. Golovnin's narrative describes his years in captivity, as well as early observations of life in Japan. Cordier Japonica 465. (2)
