HORAE B.M.V. (use of Sarum). Paris: at the expense of Simon Vostre [ca. 1515]. 8° (165 x 103mm.). a-q 8 (title Officium beate Marie Virginis ad vsum Sarum... Expensis honesti viri Symonis vostre... Parisius... ). 128 leaves. 26 lines. Gothic letter. PRINTED ON VELLUM in red and black (with sections of title, gloss, many initials and some headlines in red). Metal-cut device of Simon Vostre on title, 14 full-page illustrations, each page with illustrated and decorated border (including the Dance of Death series in the Hours of the Dead section). (Title slightly rubbed, many leaves close-shaved or shaved with loss to the borders, including the borders to 10 of the full-page illustrations, occasional light soiling.) 16th-century blind-stamped German pigskin, upper cover with an allegorical panel of Justice, the lower with one of Chastity, both panels signed S.R., vellum endleaves, g.e. (rebacked with gilt-tooled vellum, lower joint slightly split, clasps lacking). Provenance : Thorold (Syston Park bookplate). RARE. STC lists only four copies: one copy in the Bodleian, imperfect copies in the Trinity College library and at Stonyhurst, and one copy in the Folger library in Washington. The printing may well be by Philippe Pigouchet Vostre employed him to work on many of the fine Books of Hours published between about 1488 and 1521. STC 15913.
