Mitchell's New General Atlas, Containing Maps of the Various Countries of the World, Plans of Cities, Etc.... Author: Mitchell, Samuel Augustus Place: Philadelphia Publisher: S. Augustus Mitchell Date: 1873 Description: 72 leaves, 27, [4] pp. Illustrated with colored maps and plans, most colored. 38.5x31.5 cm (15¼x12½"), half-leather with pebbled cloth-covered boards, stamped in gilt and blind on cover. The Mitchell family started to produce atlases in 1846, and continued into the early 1890's. Around 1860, S. Augustus Mitchell Jr. took over, and the atlas would be called Mitchell's New General Atlas. Included in the U.S. map section are a number of cities illustrated that are often not featured in other atlases as well as a full map of Texas in 1873. Phillips 870. Ownership mark in early hand on front free endpaper. Lot Amendments Condition: Binding somewhat worn, rubbing and abrasions to leather and cloth, some chips; occasional foxing and marginal toning, a few small edge tears, small stub tears, and splits; about very good.
