Willson Date: 1869 Description: [i(title), ii-iii(blank), iv(List of Maps)] + Maps + 30(tables) pp. With 58 hand-colored maps, 5 are double-page, totaling 68 individual maps, with 28 inset plans. (folio) 15¼x12½, original embossed brown cloth, rebacked with diced calf, original morocco fore-corners mostly perished, front cover lettered in gilt. A relatively uncommon edition of the long series of Mitchell's Universal or General atlases published in the second half of the nineteenth century. The maps are copyrighted 1867. Laid in is the publisher’s printed slip addressed to subscribers, informing them that extra guards (or stubs) have been bound into the atlas, so that owners may attach additional maps--which will be available for fifteen cents apiece from the publisher. The uncommon slip is signed in ink by "Jno. D. Church, Agent." [Phillips--LeGear 6164.] Lot Amendments Condition: Insect wear to front hinge, List of Maps detached, tape stains at inner margin of first map, tape stain along outer fold of map of NY State, faint defect to inset of San Francisco Bay (evidently caused by a string adhering to the paper during printing); overall a solid copy with most maps brightly-colored; generally very good.
