MONTAIGNE, Michel de (1533-1592). Essais avec les notes de M. Coste . London: Nourse and Vaillant, 1754. 10 volumes, 12° (140 x 75mm). Woodcut ornaments. (I3 of vol. II with clean tear into text, a few marginal tears, that on M1 of vol. X touching on text.) Contemporary French crimson morocco gilt, covers with triple fillet, flat spines directly lettered in two compartments, the remaining four with a fleuron surrounded by small pointillé tools, gilt turn-ins, blue marbled endpapers, blue silk markers, gilt edges. Provenance : Admiral Sir Alexander Ludovic Duff (1862-1933, bookplate). FINE SET. This 'joli édition' was based on the 1745 London edition edited by Pierre Coste (1668-1747).
