La presente emissione si differenzia sia dalla prima tiratura - non destinata al commercio e distinta dall'indicazione Imprimerie du Cabinet du Roi al frontespizio (Einaudi, 4094) - che dagli esemplari in seconda tiratura, costituiti da sole 116 pagine e da un diverso numero di tavole. Il rapporto stilato per Luigi XVI dall'allora Direttore Generale delle Finanze Jacques Necker ebbe una larghissima diffusione: la vendita di circa 40.000 copie in un anno riflette bene la volontà del suo Autore di avviare una gestione improntata sulle riforme e sulla 'trasparenza'. Nel Compte vennero ad esempio resi noti gli importi delle pensioni concesse ai nobili e i relativi importi: secondo Necker rendendo pubblici i 'conti' della Francia sarebbe cresciuta la fiducia degli investitori, attirando quindi nelle casse dello Stato nuove risorse.
