Neptune americo-septentrional: contenant les co^tes, i^les et bancs, les baies, ports, et mouillages, et les sondes des mers de cette partie du monde . [Paris: 1778-1780]. First edition of an exceptional atlas of the east coast of America, extending from Greenland southwards to the Gulf of Mexico. Based on English surveys of north American waters, the Neptune americo-septentrional was used for strategic purposes by the French navy during the American Revolutionary War. William Faden who supplied several of the English surveys upon which these charts are based, is recorded to have ordered three copies of the atlas, destined for the homes of the hydrographer to the East India Company, the secretary of the admiralty, and King George III. The Dépôt de la Marine also sent a copy to Benjamin Franklin The subjects include 2 general charts of the east coast as well as fine maps of Florida, Louisiana, and the rivers Delaware and Hudson. Howes N-52; Phillips, Atlases 1211. Large folio (644 x 502mm). Engraved title, 26 engraved charts on 13 full sheets and 5 half sheets, by Sartine and others (dampstain to corner throughout, sometimes into plate). Contemporary mottled calf, French royal arms gilt on covers, red morocco lettering piece.
