SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe. The Cenci. A Tragedy, in Five Acts . London: "Italy. Printed for C. and J. Ollier," 1819. 8 o (232 x 149 mm). Preliminary blank leaf π1 used as front pastedown; inserted blank preceding the title. Laid paper watermarked "Stella" and "Cini" (rear endleaves of wove paper). (Lacks final blank.) Original blue boards, drab blue paper spine, manuscript title on spine, uncut (lower portion of spine renewed, a few small repairs to spine, joints slightly worn); morocco pull-off case. Provenance : purchased from Scribner Rare Books, New York, 3 September 1969. FIRST EDITION. The Cenci was printed in Livorno in an edition of 250 copies but not published in England until spring 1820. There was a change in paper stock during production, resulting in various combinations, as here. Shelley worked exceptionally fast on The Cenci , composing the work in only two months after an inspiring reading of the story of Beatrice Cenci in manuscript form while in Italy. It is the only work by Shelley to reach an authorized second edition in his lifetime. Ashley V, p.69; Granniss/Grolier Shelley 50. VERY FINE COPY.
