Sketch of Public Surveys in New Mexico, to Accompany Report of Surveyor General 1855 Author: Pelham, William Place: Washington, D.C. Publisher: Date: 1855 Description: Lithographed map. 18.7x27 cm (7¼x10½"). Early mapping of New Mexico and what was to be Arizona, of which Weat remarks, "The surveys in question concerned the general area near Santa Fe and Taos. The Colorado River, to the west, is most imperfectly shown. No less than eight varieties of Apaches are scattered about the map." He proceeds with his criticism, that the map shows "that a start [on the survey] had been made but that precious little had been accomplished to date. Apparently all that had actually been done (and that is problematical) was to survey a line north from an initial point in the valley of the Rio Grande, near Albuquerque (which is not named), to Taos. The remainder of the map, which includes present Arizona, is taken up with the names of Indian tribes. About all that can be said for Mr. Pelham is that he got his `sketch' in on time, but that practically no surveying had been done." Still, an interesting if rather barren depiction of the Southwest so recently won from Mexico, with Santa Fe nestled among mountain ranges, various rivers shown, the different bands of Apache Indians and other tribes located. Lot Amendments Condition: A little darkening at margins and folds, very good. Lots sold without reserve are sold "as is" and are not returnable under any circumstances. The minimum shipping and handling per invoice is $25 for shipments to the US and $40 for shipments sent outside the US Please consider this when determining your bid amounts Item number: 339063
