1953 MERCEDES-BENZ 300 S CABRIOLET Chassis No. 00192/53 Engine No. M186 00219/53 Dark blue with cinnamon leather interior. Many Mercedes-Benz fans the world over doubted whether Mercedes could recover from the wartime bombings, but by the early '50s they were producing not only trucks but a full range of cars, including a luxury model, the 300 sedan. This was immediately successful, and soon the directors of Daimler-Benz AG decided that there was a market for a luxury sports model as well. In 1952, the designers were given the the go-ahead and they decided to work with the ingredients of the 300 sedan, repackaging them into a svelte two-door model. The short-chassis "S" series of 300's were first shown at the 1952 Salon de Paris where they created a sensation. These gorgeous sports-luxury cars were built for the rich and famous. With a price tag of about $12,500, they were the top-of-the-line Mercedes, ten times the price of the standard American luxury car. Movie stars like Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Judy Garland and Bing Crosby bought 300 S models, as did many other prominent people including the Shah of Iran, the Aga Khan and the King of Jordan. Unfortunately, production of the lovely short-chassis 300 models ceased in 1957 because each car was so labor-intensive that Daimler-Benz lost money on every car they produced. Only 560 were built in all. We are told that this 300S Cabriolet underwent a complete body-off-chassis restoration during the 1980's in the owner's personal shop and has had continuous, meticulous cosmetic and mechanical detailing since then coupled with very little road use. Only 410 miles have been put on the clock since the restoration. As with many 300 Series cars, this example has had the original block replaced with another 300 Series engine block during its lilfetime. Only the best and most authentic materials were used during the restoration including using Sikkens paint system for the Mercedes dark blue #904; burl wood garnish moldings; Wilton wool carpet; a dark blue German canvas top with top boot and full headliner in correct German weave fabric and optional chrome wheels. All German OEM parts were used wherever possible.
